The 2020-2021 school year was one filled with lots of uncertainty and hardships for students and people around the globe due to the novel COVID-19 virus.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, we are proud of students’ resiliency throughout the year.

We are especially excited to spotlight the winners of our 2020-2021 scholarship:

Nahzire West, Trinity Lewis, and Yakia Edmonds!

Nahzire West is a graduate of Washington HS. He was a 4-year letterman in baseball and was named Captain all four years.

In addition to being a stellar athlete on the field, Nahzire was also involved in many extracurricular activities including dual enrollment, L.E.A.D. Ambassador, HOSA Debate Team, and the Student Government Association.

Nahzire has a tremendous entrepreneurial spirit. He launched his own apparel line, which is a very sought-after product by many of his peers.

Nahzire will be attending Georgia State University in the fall, where he plans to major in Business Marketing. While in college, he plans to seek internship opportunities to learn the skills needed to one day run his own business or lead a Fortune 500 company.

Trinity Lewis is a graduate of Henry Grady HS. In addition to touting a 4.0 GPA and being Captain of the girl’s basketball team for all four years, Trinity is also heavily involved in the community and church.

She has served on the Atlanta Public Schools’ Equity Board for several years, where she led the charge in developing the school system’s first documented equity policy.

Trinity is a change agent and her desire for progress is always on display. She has volunteered for programs like No Place for Hate and is taking the initiative to recreate an abandoned park in her neighborhood. Trinity envisions that the park will serve as an outlet for youth.

Trinity plans to attend the University of Georgia in the fall to major in Urban Development and Planning.

Yakia Edmonds is a graduate of KIPP Atlanta Collegiate HS. In addition to maintaining nearly a 3.5 GPA, she was involved in several extracurricular activities including serving as a teen volunteer for the City of Refuge, volunteering as a server for Mount Vernon Baptist Church, helping as a teacher's assistant and contributing as Goodwill Volunteer.

Yakia loves to dance and was a member of KAC Dance from 2017-2020 and the Dolce Dancing Diva Club from 2017 -2019. She was also a part of KIPP’s Varsity Cheerleading squad. When she is not dancing or cheering, Yakia taps into her entrepreneurial spirit and has started a very successful clothing business.

Post-high school, Yakia plans to attend Georgia Southern University, where she will major in Accounting. We have no doubt that Yakia will be successful in whatever endeavor she chooses after college.
